Reducing aviation’s carbon footprint one leg at a time

As the battle to prevent drastic climate change continues, the aviation industry has set an aggressive goal to be carbon neutral by 2050. While there are a bewildering array of alternative propulsion and fuel cells and advance air mobility projects in the research and development phase, we’re aware that right now there are very few things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint.

One is the switch to SAF, but it’s hard to source, notably higher priced than regular jet fuel,  and not yet widely available. In the US the book-and-claim system gives a proxy option to purchase SAF, but again availability limits its effect. Carbon offsetting supports projects that are environmentally friendly around the world. However, these invariably require calculations, reporting, analysis and then the seeking of a reliable carbon offset project.

Yet while the options are limited, the mandates are not, and internationally the carbon reduction landscape has become increasingly complex for operators, which is why we’re proud to have developed an easy-to-use carbon emissions reporting module to support customers aiming to be compliant.

Available now, the automated carbon reporting tool is one of the latest SD initiatives designed to raise industry standards, support customer operations, and improve flight department efficiencies. It takes real-time information generated by SD’s FlightDeck Freedom® (FDF) datalink service to accurately capture fuel burn. The system then calculates the carbon emissions based on the amount of fuel burned, fuel type and blend for either a single leg, a global road show, a single aircraft or a complete fleet.

We know that its important to be compliant and that its complicated, which is why the intelligent system meets regulatory standards and generates reports displaying a variety of useful metrics, including how much CO2 has been generated, in which airspace it was produced, and how this compares to previous or other similar trips. This streamlines the computations relating to mandatory and voluntary emission reporting and offsetting, making it easier for you to present reliable, precise reports.

Information is presented graphically and can be used to generate carbon certificates, transactional records for purchased credits, and authenticated tracking information. The system saves time and ensures consistent calculations globally. You benefit from seamless access to qualified carbon credits via approved registries and carbon credits can be transacted via the reputable carbon offsetting platform Patch, which is integrated with the SD Pro® operating system. This makes the carbon reporting tool especially beneficial to those responsible for ESG initiatives and ever-evolving CORSIA compliance.

We recognize that our industry is part of the carbon problem.  So we want to be part of the solution which is why we have designed our system to do all the work for you. This means you can get on with what you do best, operating your flights. You will welcome the simplicity and convenience.
