Connecting everything, everywhere, all the time…

…….Inmarsat, SD and Dual Polarization.

SD originates agnostic products and services that enable our talented team to deliver tailored, purpose-built technology systems that work flawlessly with best-in-class partners. In conjunction with satellite operator Inmarsat, with which we’ve worked for more than twenty-five years, we are focused on managing transmission so cleanly and efficiently that you can forget about your connectivity – in the nicest possible sense.

Inmarsat operates 14 geosynchronous satellites, some 22,236 miles above our planet. Five of these operate in the Ka-band spectrum to support the Global Xpress network, the first and only high-speed mobile broadband network seamlessly spanning the globe. The fifth satellite in the chain, the GX5, is a very high throughput satellite delivering more capacity than the rest of the fleet combined. It transmits dual polarity signals, which effectively doubles the amount of data being sent. In another long history of firsts, we are proud that our Plane Simple® Ka-band terminal will be able to harness this technology successfully, delivering an even greater experience to you, our customers.

The directional spin of the signal makes the dual polarity so powerful.  When a signal is transmitted from the antenna to the satellite, the Ka-band wave spirals through the atmosphere to avoid clashing with incoming signals spiraling back from the satellite. The helictical signals are constantly moving in the opposite direction to each other, doubling the amount of data that can be transmitted. The signals are conveyed backwards and forward simultaneously rather than in one single wave.

In addition, the antenna and satellite seek out the individual signal transmission, effectively strengthened by the motion through space. Or, put another way, imagine a group of people in a room. A pair speaks Spanish, another couple Japanese, and the rest English. The Spanish and Japanese pair can each speak loudly and understand each other because they only listen out for a specific language. This avoids disrupting other conversations and enables them to continue uninterrupted; the signals are making the connections more quickly with the satellite and antenna as nothing else is blocking, interrupting, or disturbing them.  This achieves what we are all looking for – more data, more quickly, and with fewer interruptions.

For Inmarsat, this dual polarization is enabling the evolution of its Jet ConneX airtime solution. For Satcom Direct, it will allow more Ka-band spectrum transmission between our Plane Simple Ka-band terminals and the satellite.

Most significantly, what does this mean for you, the customer? It means more devices, enabled to be consistently more productive. The Inmarsat GX5 satellite is already delivering this dual polarization to antennas in the European and Middle Eastern regions, and we are excited about the future possibilities it brings to our Plane Simple antenna series.

Inmarsat will add more satellites with dual polarization capacity in the next 12 months. We are already exploring other ways to maximize them so that SD customers can connect everything, everywhere, all the time.
